Opium is the dried latex which is obtained from the Opium poppy.
It was mixed with tobacco to be smoked in China in the 17th century, but remained an elite privilege until the early 19th century, where "rich peasants" would also smoke the drug. Opium was traded with China illegally via the East India company.
